On Sunday May 31, 2020, Professor Dr. Hossam El-Mallahi – President of Nahda University honored the team of researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the university who participated in a scientific study in cooperation with some Egyptian and foreign universities to explore the potential effectiveness of some natural products as antagonists to the emerging corona virus that causes Covid 19 disease using computer-based molecular modeling.
The President of the University emphasized during the honor witnessed by the members of the University Council today on the university’s role in community service, especially through research and scientific studies that respond to the needs of the Egyptian community, and The university administration was keen to provide all the facilities and support required to support research teams at the university in cooperation with other universities to achieve a breakthrough in scientific studies that serve the community.
The honor included Dr. Hossam Mukhtar, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies, Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Ahmed Sayed, Lecturer at the Pharmacology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Asmaa Abu Al-Majd, Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Nahda University.
It is mentioned that it is in implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, to intensify the conduct of specialized scientific research to discover a possible treatment for Coronavirus, with the support of Dr. Hossam Al Mallahi, President of Al Nahda University, and the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Ayoub, Vice President of Nahda University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Dr. Hamdy Abdel Rahman, Dean of the University’s Faculty of Pharmacy, cooperation took place between the Faculty of Pharmacy at Nahda University, the universities of Beni Suef and Minya, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Egypt and the University of West Scotland, with the participation of Dr. Hala Zayed, Minister of Health and Population, and this cooperation resulted in the publication of research to explore the potential effectiveness of some natural products as anti-corona virus that causes Covid 19 disease using computer-based molecular modeling, in addition to studying the physical and chemical properties of these compounds as potential treatments for the disease.
The research concluded that a group of phenolic compounds are available in abundance in many plants and fruits, such as pomegranate, berries of all kinds, and hibiscus. The research came under the title: “Nature is a hidden treasure for potential anti-corona virus drugs.”
Participated in the research, Dr. Hossam Mukhtar, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies, Faculty of Pharmacy, Nahda University, Dr. Ahmed Sayed, Lecturer at the Pharmacology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Nahda University, Dr. Asmaa Abu Al-Majd, Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Nahda University, Dr. Amira Khattab, Lecturer, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Arab Academy for Science and Maritime Transport, and Dr. Hala Zayed, Minister of Health and Population, and Dr. Osama Ramadan, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Minia University and Deraya University, and Dr. Mostafa Ezzat is Associate Professor of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Western Scotland.
The university family hopes that this scientific research and what the Egyptian scientists are doing will contribute to the speed of reaching an effective treatment to eradicate this epidemic in the near future, God willing. We prayed to the Almighty to preserve our beloved country, its leadership and its people.
